Course outline and syllabus

This course offers a concise introduction to the benefits of therapeutic movement as a positive sensory integration, encouraging a mindful approach to self-management and neurological development.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and global development delays
  • Learn simple breathing techniques, yoga postures and relaxation exercises to enhance self awareness, mood and behaviour
  • Explore the benefits of a non – competitive approach to physicality to enhance engagement and participation
  • Understand the relationship between parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system to the sensory system
  • Defining sensory processing and the 8 senses
  • Explore the freedom of movement to music to encourage spatial awareness, co-ordination and self expression
  • Build a simple and effective movement therapy session
  • Strategies to encourage self-confidence, classroom learning and social integration
  • Learn how to manage behaviours that challenge and understand the importance of supporting the carer

Modules:

Friday evening seminar:

  • Develop a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and global development delays
  • Understand the relationship between parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system to the sensory system
  • Defining sensory processing and the 8 senses
  • The benefits of yogic breathing and therapeutic movement to music

Day one is an evening session exploring complex needs and the benefits of yoga and movement as a positive sensory integration.

Saturday, Yoga, Mindfulness & Movement Therapy:

  • Learn simple breathing techniques, yoga postures and relaxation exercises to enhance self awareness, mood and behaviour
  • Explore the benefits of a non – competitive approach to physicality to enhance engagement and participation
  • Explore the freedom of movement to music to encourage spatial awareness, co-ordination and self expression
  • Build a simple and effective movement therapy session

Day two you will learn breathing techniques, yoga postures, free movement to music and effective self-regulation tools to help manage anxiety. We will explore sensory integration, movement therapy and mindfulness tools to calm and organise mental states whilst increasing the ability to release tension and relax.

Here we’ll explore how to build a programme to support your individual’s specific needs, how to plan a lesson, encouraging participation, PECS, reinforcements, scheduling and consistency of sessions.

Sunday, A Mindful approach to managing behaviours that challenge and caring for the carer :

  • Understanding Mindfulness and its potential to transform energy
  • Learn how to manage behaviours that challenge during sessions
  • Encourage participation and focus
  • Explore strategies that boost self-confidence, classroom learning and social integration
  • Understand the importance of supporting the wellbeing of the carer

Day three we’ll take a look at developing a mindful session that can help enhance learning and social integration.

We will also offer support for situations that may arise when delivering a session. For example: How best to support your student with behaviours that challenge? What to do during an escalation?  How to encourage your student to participate and stay focused.

The course will conclude with various restorative techniques that support the wellbeing of the carer.
