Course outline and syllabus

This course offers a concise introduction to the benefits of therapeutic movement as a positive sensory integration, encouraging a mindful approach to self-management and neurological development.

Our teacher-training course has met the stringent requirements set by The Yoga Alliance Professionals UK.  Graduates are trained to the highest standard and are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance Professionals.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and global development delays
  • Learn simple breathing techniques, yoga postures and relaxation exercises to enhance self awareness, mood and behaviour
  • Explore the benefits of a non – competitive approach to physicality to enhance engagement and participation
  • Understand the relationship between parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system to the sensory system
  • Defining sensory processing and the 8 senses
  • Explore the freedom of movement to music to encourage spatial awareness, co-ordination and self expression
  • Build a simple and effective movement therapy session
  • Learn deep touch pressure techniques and support physical concerns – hyper mobility, Cerebral Palsy, spinal fusions
  • Strategies to encourage self-confidence, classroom learning and social integration
  • Learn how to manage behaviours that challenge and understand the importance of supporting the carer

Modules:

Day one:

  • Develop a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and global development delays
  • Learn simple breathing techniques, yoga postures and relaxation exercises to enhance self awareness, mood and behaviour
  • Explore the benefits of a non – competitive approach to physicality to enhance engagement and participation
  • Understand the relationship between parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system to the sensory system
  • Defining sensory processing and the 8 senses

You will learn simple breathing techniques, yoga postures and effective self-regulation tools to help manage anxiety. We will explore sensory integration, yoga based movement and mindfulness tools to calm and organise mental states whilst increasing the ability to release tension and relax.

We will also offer support for situations that may arise when delivering a session. For example: How best to support your student with behaviours that challenge? What to do during an escalation?  How to encourage your student to participate and stay focused.

Day two:

  • Explore the freedom of movement to music to encourage spatial awareness, co-ordination and self expression
  • Build a simple and effective movement therapy session

Day two we’ll take a look at delivering movement and dance to music, developing a session that can enhance learning and social integration. Here we’ll explore building a programme to support your individual’s specific needs, how to plan a lesson, encouraging participation, PECS, reinforcements, scheduling and consistency of sessions.

We will also offer support for situations that may arise when delivering a session. For example: How best to support your student with behaviours that challenge? What to do during an escalation?  How to encourage your student to participate and stay focused.

The course will conclude with various restorative techniques that support the wellbeing of the carer.

This course is open to all, no previous knowledge of yoga or dance required: Parents, carers, SENCO school tutors, ABA tutors, OT therapists, paediatric professionals, service providers, yoga, Pilates, fitness professionals and anyone looking for simple strategies to support individuals with Autism, learning disabilities and mental health
